Analysis on the Screening Myopia Results of Primary School Students of Zhongshan in 2023

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To realize the current status of myopia prevalence among elementary school students in Zhongshan in 2023,and to analyze the epidemiological characteristics of myopia among elementary school students in the region,so as to provide a scientific reference for the establishment of effective intervention mechanisms.METHODS From May to December of 2023,a total of 58 964 elementary school students from 41 elementary school in the area were selected from that region by stratified cluster random sampling method for visual acuity screening and myopia related questionnaire survey.Myopia screening and diagnostic criteria were in accordance with The Guidelines on Appropriate Technology for Prevention and Control of Myopia in Children and The Code of Practice for Refractive Error Screening of Primary and Secondary School Students.RESULTS A total of 21 375 of 58 964 myopes were detected,with an overall myopia rate of 36.30%,and it showed that the low,intermediate and high myopia rates were all on the rise as the grades increased;there was little difference in the myopia rate between boys and girls in the lower grades,but the myopia rate of girls was significantly higher than that of boys after the fourth grade,and the differences mentioned above were all statistically significant.Students'myopia was affected by many factors,such as poor sitting posture,prolonged close eye use,few outdoor activities,and lack of sleep.Schools needed to improve the provision of school nurses,lighting detection,desk and chair adjustment and vision examination.CONCLUSION The myopia rate of elementary school students in Zhongshan is higher than the national average,and there is a need to further strengthen preventive and control measures to prevent and reduce the occurrence and development of myopia.
