Analysis on the Changing Trend of Health Literacy among Rural Residents in Liaoning Province from 2019 to 2023

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To understand the level and trend of health literacy among rural residents in Liaoning Province.METHODS A stratified multi-stage proportional to population size sampling(PPS sampling)method was carried out to select the permanent population aged 15~69 years old to conduct a survey using a unified questionnaire.RESULTS The health literacy levels of rural residents were 11.47%,16.92%,17.77%,21.16%and 25.24%respectively in Liaoning Province from 2019 to 2023,which were significantly lower than the average level of the province,but the gap decreased year by year.The growth rate was significantly higher than the average level of the province in the same period,and the growth rate was the fastest in 2020.Compared with 2019,male and female increased by 13.09%and 14.48%respectively;the 15~24 age group increased the most(33.22%),followed by the 25~34 age group and the 45~54 age group,which were 16.33%and 15.28%respectively,and the 65~69 age group was the lowest(9.39%).With the increase of education level,the greater the increase.Among the three aspects of literacy,healthy lifestyle and behavior,basic knowledge and concepts,and basic skills literacy increased by 17.48%,9.56%,and 8.85%respectively.Among the 6 types of problem literacy,basic medical care,chronic disease prevention and control,health information,infectious disease prevention and control,scientific health concept,safety and first aid literacy increased by 14.65%,13.71%,10.70%,10.53%,9.32%and 7.73%respectively.The overall level of health literacy,basic knowledge and concepts,healthy lifestyles and behaviors,scientific health concepts,prevention and treatment of chronic diseases,safety and first aid,and health information literacy grew fastest in 2020.CONCLUSION The health literacy level among rural residents has increased yearly,but the growth rate has slowed down.It is recommended to carry out targeted interventions in rural areas for weak health literacy knowledge,and continue to carry out extensive health education and health science popularization.
