Study on the Impact of Disability Levels on Informal Care Costs for Disabled Elderly People in Beijing

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Taking the disabled elderly in Beijing as the research object,the study empirically analyzes the impact of the disability level of the disabled elderly on the cost of informal care.METHODS Data from five waves of Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 2005 to 2018 are used.RESULTS The results show that the level of disability has a significant impact on the economic cost of informal care and the time cost of informal care.The higher the level of disability,the more expenditure and time spent on informal care.There is a substitution in the provision of care time among children,other relatives,and spouses of disabled elderly.The informal care time of the elderly living alone is significantly reduced.CONCLUSION It is recommended to strengthen the training of care skills for informal caregivers such as children,improve the quality of informal care,and actively explore various forms of care,such as promoting formal care to meet the care needs of different disabled elderly people.
