Qualitative study on the stressors and coping strategies for postgraduate of professional master's degree in oncology

Abstract:Objective To explore the various stressors and coping strategies for postgraduate residents of professional master's degree majoring in oncology.Methods Guided by the phenomenological approach within qualitative research,purposeful sampling was employed to select 20 residents as study participants,who were professional master's degree postgraduates majoring in oncology from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center(SYSUCC)and Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center Gansu Hospital(SYSUCC-GS).In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with these residents.Colaizzi 7-step method and Nvivo 12.0 Plus software were used to code and analyze the interview data,and four themes and eleven sub-themes were refined.Results There were obvious differences in the stressors of residents between the two hospitals.SYSUCC residents reported higher stress levels in research and graduation-related matters compared with SYSUCC-GS students,while SYSUCC-GS students experienced greater stress in parent-child relationships and intimate relationships,but had lower expenditure stress.Conclusion Postgraduate residents of professional master's degree majoring in oncology are confronted with a complex and diverse set of stressors,and there are regional differences.It is recommended to adopt coping strategies that integrate problem-focused with emotion-focused approaches to effectively deal with stress challenges.
