Online consultation by"patient-educators"—exploration of a new model of consultation skills training for general practice residents

Abstract:Objective To explore the effectiveness of online consultation with"patient-educators"on communication ability,interpersonal relationship,empathy and disease management skills of general practice residents.Methods Eight"patient-educators"were selected and trained to conduct a 6-month online consultation training for 15 second-year general practice residents,which was implemented and video recorded via Tencent Meeting.Eight sessions of a single module were performed every three months,and the first and last catenary training of each module were scored with the Consultation and Relational Empathy Measure(CARE)and the Management Interview Station Rating Form(MISRF).Results The scores of CARE and MISRF were improved before and after the completion of module 1 training(all P<0.05),and the scores of CARE scale were improved after the completion of module 2 training,but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05),the improvement of MISRF score was statistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion The"patient-educators"online consultation training is more helpful for residents to improve their consultation and communication skills,as well as their ability for disease management.
