Practice and analysis of the psychiatric resident clinical skills competition as a supplement for the standardized training assessment system

Abstract:Objective To analyze the questions and results of a psychiatric resident skills competition in South China in order to explore the feasibility of a clinical skills competition for residents as a supplement to the standardized training and assessment system.Methods In this research,the 28 teams of the first South China Regional Psychiatric Resident Skills Competition in December 2021 served as the study subjects to summarize the correlation between the competition questions and the standardized training and assessment,as well as to calculate the scoring rates of the teams and the mean scores,standard deviations and pass rates of each station.Results The Clinical Skills Competition consisted of a Preliminary Round and a Final Round,both of which included a Clinical Thinking Station,a Clinical Communication Station and a Neurological Examination Station.In the Preliminary Round,the average score of the 28 participating teams was 79.56%.The scores for each station:clinical thinking station(79.23±8.25);clinical communication station(81.01±6.48);neurological examination station(78.50±13.68).In the Final Round,the average score of the 11 finalist teams was improved to 81.54%(scores for each station:clinical thinking station(81.56±2.58);clinical communication station(83.82±3.11);neurological examination station(79.90±8.45).Conclusion The clinical skills competition can effectively assess the clinical skills of psychiatry junior residents and can serve as a supplement to the standardized training and assessment system through continuous improvement of the details.
