OSTE in teaching competence assessment for surgical preceptors

Abstract:Objective To explore the advantages of using the objective structured teaching evaluation(OSTE)to evaluate the teaching ability of surgical teachers.Methods Three clinical teaching scenarios were set up to evaluate the teaching ability of surgical teachers,including surgical operation,teaching rounds and doctor-patient communication,in October 2021.Results OSTE score summary showed that teaching competency scores for teaching rounds and doctor-patient communication were between(48.17±17.39)and(79.08±15.93).The highest score was scenario control(79.08±15.93).The scores for evaluating the medical residents,and guiding and stimulating residents to study independently did not reach 60 points,(54.83±18.90)and(48.17±17.39),respectively.Conclusion The teaching weaknesses of surgical teachers can be accurately found through OSTE.It is the direction of teaching training.
