Abstract:Objective To evaluate the efficacy of the training of bougie-assisted endotracheal intubation in a simulated cardiopulmonary resuscitation scenario. Methods Sixty-five anesthesia residents enrolled in the standardized residency training program at Peking Union Medical College Hospital were included in this study.Residents who passed the screening test continued to attend two tests conducted on the day of training and 3 months after training respectively,in which they performed endotracheal intubation via video laryngoscopy in a simulated cardiopulmonary resuscitation scenario using the standard bougie, the preloaded bougie, the stylet, and the non-assistance approaches. The performance of endotracheal intubation was evaluated based on the first-attempt success and the time to intubation. Results Three months after the training, the first-attempt success of the standard bougie approach was similar to the preloaded bougie approach, but was significantly higher than the stylet and the non-assistance approaches(P<0.05);and the time to intubation of the standard bougie approach was also shorter than the stylet and the non-assistance approaches(P<0.05).The first-attempt success and the time to intubation of the two bougie approaches did not differ significantly 3 months after the training, when compared to the performance on the day of training. Conclusion Anesthesia residents demonstrated good intubation performance 3 months after the brief multi-model training of bougie use, indicating the promotion potential of this training.
