Abstract:Objective To explore the cytologic features of suture granulomas in cervical/vaginal cytologic smears, which were rarely reported in literatures. Methods Cervical/vaginal liquid-based cytology smears were retrospectively analyzed from six patients with a history of uterine surgery. Results All patients had a history of cervical surgeries, and their cytologic smears were sampled within half a year following their surgeries. While foreign sutures were found in all the 6 cervical/vaginal liquid-based cytologic specimens, granulomatous reactions were found in 4 of them.Such sutures appeared as rectangular foreign bodies, varying in sizes, lengths, and staining(red or blue),some of which were engulfed or wrapped by multinuclear giant cells. Conclusion Suture granulomas are rarely observed in cervical cytology, but can be confidently diagnosed in cytologic specimens in conjunction with the history of uterine surgery in patients, thus offering some hints to the clinical treatment.
