Abstract:Objective To explore the clinicopathological features and differential diagnosis of esophageal and pharyngeal fibrovascular polyps(FVP)and well-differentiated liposarcoma(WDLPS).Methods The clinicopathologic features and immunophenotypes of esophageal and pharyngeal FVPs and WDLPS diagnosed in the Department of Pathology of the Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical University were retrospectively analyzed, and related literatures were reviewed. Results The clinical manifestations of the 3 patients were mainly foreign body sensation in the throat and dysphagia.Under endoscope, two cases were polypoid masses, usually large in size, which could protrude into the oral cavity or slide into the stomach. It looked similar under the microscope, the surface of the lesion was covered with squamous epithelium, which were composed of adipose tissue, fibrous tissue and blood vessels. The atypical cells with large nuclei and deep staining were seen in the fibrous tissue or adipose tissue.FVP lacked specific markers;WDLPS expressed CDK4 and CD34,and fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH)showed amplification of the MDM2 gene. Conclusion Both esophageal and pharyngeal FVP and WDLPS are rare. There are many similarities between WDLPS and FVP either in the general changes or under the microscope, and it is easy to misdiagnose WDLPS as FVP.Adequate sampling and careful observation of morphological characteristics are required, while FISH detection of MDM2 gene is performed to prevent misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis.
