Abstract:Intermediate-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors are the second most common type of epithelial tumors in the larynx, but they have a low incidence and are still considered rare tumors. The most common type is the intermediate-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor (atypical carcinoid). The concept of neuroendocrine tumors in this area has undergone multiple changes. To achieve a unified naming system for neuroendocrine tumors throughout the body, the 2020 edition of WHO for head and neck tumors began to adopt the same classification and naming methods as the digestive system. Due to the low incidence and morphological diversity of this tumor, it is prone to misdiagnosis. This article reports a case of intermediate-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor of the larynx, which was misdiagnosed as signet ring cell carcinoma in the biopsy specimen due to the morphological similarity of some cells to signet ring cells. Through the discussion of clinical features, pathological characteristics, and treatment prognosis of this type of tumor, we aim to enhance the awareness of pathologists regarding this tumor.
