Abstract:Objective To analyze the characteristics of intraoperative frozen sections(FS)for multiple pulmonary nodules and to improve the accuracy of diagnosis. Methods Clinical data from 547 cases of early stage primary lung adenocarcinoma were collected.Paraffin sections(Final Pathology,FP)were used as the gold standard for comparison with FS diagnoses. The study also identified causes for delays and discrepancies in FS diagnosis.Results(1)The rates of delayed and inconsistent diagnoses in FS for multiple pulmonary nodules were higher than those for solitary nodules in the three cohorts of early stage primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma.(2)Delays and inconsistencies in FS for multiple nodules were significantly associated with insufficient section preparation(P<0.05).Conclusion Compared with solitary pulmonary nodules, insufficient sectioning is common in multiple pulmonary nodules, due to the inherent multiple numbers and limitations of frozen section preparation. This leads to a delay in the diagnosis of frozen sections, and there is a relatively high incidence of inconsistency between the diagnosis of frozen sections and that of paraffin sections.
