Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinicopathological features of mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma(MTSCC)of the kidney. Methods Twelve cases of MTSCC from 2013 to 2022 in Wujin Hospital of Jiangsu University and Shanghai Rui Jin Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University School were collected.Immunohistochemical staining was performed, four cases underwent fluorescence in situ hybridization(FISH)detection. The prognosis was followed up by telephone. Results There were 10 females and 2 males aged from 39 to 82 years, with a median age of 58 years. The tumor size ranged from 3.0 cm to 8.0 cm.Histologically, these 12 cases displayed the morphologic characteristics of classical MTSCC and mucous deficiency occurred in four cases.Papillary renal cell carcinoma areas and papillary adenoma areas were noted respectively in two cases.Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells expressed AMACR(12/12),CK7(12/12),Vimentin(11/12),PAX-8(10/12)and Ki-67 expression rate was low(1%~10%).The fluorescence in situ hybridization assay showed that four cases did not have triploids on chromosomes 7 and 17 and one case with papillary renal cell carcinoma had triploids on chromosomes 7 and 17.Ten cases were followed up for 18 to 136 months. One case was transferred during a visit with the tumor survived for 8 months, but with multiple metastases and the other 9 cases had no tumor recurrence and metastasis. Conclusion MTSCC is a rare renal cell carcinoma without obvious clinical and imaging symptoms. It has special clinicopathologic features and its diagnosis depends on careful search of classical pathologies. It has an overall good prognosis and a minority of cases are progressive.
