Bilateral medullary thyroid carcinoma with papillary carcinoma and lymph node metastasis:report of a case

Abstract：Objective To explore the clinical and pathological characteristics, pathogenesis, and prognosis of medullary thyroid carcinoma combined with papillary thyroid carcinoma. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on a young case of bilateral medullary thyroid carcinoma combined with papillary thyroid carcinoma with lymph node double cancer metastasis, including clinical manifestations, related laboratory examinations, and pathological features, and relevant literature was reviewed. Results A 27-year-old male patient was admitted for subacute thyroiditis. Four years later, he was diagnosed with right-sided medullary thyroid carcinoma combined with papillary carcinoma, and left-sided papillary carcinoma combined with medullary carcinoma, with double cancer metastasis found in the same lymph node in the central region and regions 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the left side, both being independent lesions; while only medullary carcinoma metastasis was found in the right-sided central region and regions 2, 3, 4, and 5. Conclusion This case of bilateral medullary thyroid carcinoma combined with papillary carcinoma, with double cancer metastasis in the same lymph node and as separate lesions in a young patient is rare. Through case analysis and literature review, this article aims to enhance understanding of this disease, providing reference for the diagnosis and treatment of such patients and avoiding missed diagnosis.
