Abstract:Objective This study investigated the role of EGFR mutation detection in pleural effusion for predicting response to EGFR-TKI therapy in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods 62 patients with advanced NSCLC who were treated with Gefitinib were included in this study. Pleural effusion from these patients were collected, and EGFR mutation was examined by ARMS. Subsequently, effective rate, disease control rate and progression-free survival were evaluated. Results The effective rate and disease control rate of EGFR-TKI treatment in patients with EGFR mutation were significantly higher than those in EGFR wild type patients (P < 0.05). The progression-free survival of EGFR mutation patients was longer than that of EGFR wild type patients, but there was no statistically significant difference between them (P > 0.05). Conclusion The detection of EGFR mutation in pleural effusion has certain predictive value for EGFR-TKI therapy in NSCLC patients.
