Abstract:Objective To study the clinicopathologic features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of mucinous breast carcinomas. Methods 19 cases of mucinous breast carcinomas (MPB) were retrospectively analyzed with clinical data, histology features, immunohistochemical characteristics and reciew of the relevant literatures. Results In the 19 cases of mucinous breast carcinomas, there were 10 cases of mixed mucinous carcinoma and 9 cases of pure mucinous carcinoma.19 female patients aged from 33 to 67 years. The tumor diameter ranged from 1.2 to 3.5 cm.Grossly,it was soft, gray and colloidial appearances with clear margins.Microscopically, the tumor showed nest of cells floating in lakes of extracellular mucoid material separated by delicate fibrous septae. The cells were relativerly consisitent, not obviously atypia and rare mitotic activity, arranged in solid, culsters or cribriform pattern, sometimes tubular pattern. The mucinous carcinoma was estrogen receptor (ER) positive in 18/19 cases, progesterone receptor (PgR) positive in 14/19 cases.and C-erbB-2 was negative in 16 cases,in which 3 cases were moderately positive (2 +) and 1 cases strongly positive (3 +).Neuroendoerine differentiation was observed in 3 cases. Conclusions Mucinous breast carcinomas (MPB) is a rare breast carcinoma with good prognosis.MPB is offen misdiagnosed as by imaging analysis and clinical examination. It needs to be distinguished from mucocele-like lesions of the breast.
