Abstract:Objective To investigate the morphologic changes of esophageal carcinoma,para-cancer and normal tissues after neoadjuvant therapy and to indicate the key points of differential diagnosis. Methods 85 cases of esophageal carcinoma after neoadjuvaot therapy were analyzed.Review of biopsy pathological sections was conducted before neoadjuvant therapy. The HE-stained sections after operation were reviewed, and the changes of the cancer,para-cancer and normal tissues were collected. Results The main changes of esophageal carcinoma after neoadjuvant therapy were cellular degeneration, stromal fibrosis and others. These changes were often upgrading of the tumor to a poorly differentiated carcinoma.Lymph node was atrophy. The morphologic changes of lymph node were similar to that of the original site. The squamous epithelium of para-cancer showed acanthosis, focal acantholysis, ballooning and cystic degeneration of keratinocytes. Conclusion The morphologic changes of esophageal carcinoma after neoadjuvant therapy may be one of difficulties in diagnosis.Sufficient examination of specimen and immunohistochemistry (AE1/AE3,MNF-116 and CD68) may help solve this problem.
