Abstract:Objective To explore the clinical pathological features, diagnosis differential diagnosis and prognosis of colonic malakoplakia. Methods The clinical manifestation and pathological features were analyzed in one case of colonic malakoplakia with review of relevant literatures. Results The case was misdiagnosed as colon cancer by the analysis of clinical manifestation and colonoscopy. The histologic examination of the biopsy specimen revealed sheets of histiocytes containing abundant eosinophihc cytoplasm.Outsides of histiocytoid cells,we found Michaelis-Gutmann bodies (M-G bodies),which look like "owl-eye cell" or "targetoid appearance cell".And they were positive with Prussian blue (for iron) and periodic acid-Schiff staining.Immunohistochemically, histiocytes were positive for CD68 and CD163.Conclusion Colonic malakoplakia is a rare disease, which is frequently misdiagnosed as a malignant disease because of the clinical manifestation and colonoscopy findings.Correct pathologic diagnosis may play an important role in standard treatment and prognostic evaluation of colonic malakoplakia.
