Abstract:Objective To investigate the application value of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the differential diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by immunohistochemical (IHC) visualization of bile canaliculi. Methods 36 cases of HCC tissue (7 well differentiated,19 moderate differentiated and 10 poor differentiated) and 10 cases of normal liver tissue were enrolled in our study.EnVision immunohistochemical examination was performed to detect the expression of P-gp and visualization of bile canaliculi. Results In the normal liver tissue group and the HCC group,a canalicular staining pattern was found for P-gpin in 10 specimens (100%,10/10) and 29 specimens (80.6%,29/36),respectively.Its positive rates were 100% (7/7),88.5% (23/26) and 60% (6/10) in well, moderately and poorly differentiated HCC,respectively. Conclusion P-gp may be one useful immunohistochemical marker in the differential diagnosis of HCC by exhibiting a characteristic canalicullar staining pattern. Its positive rate decreases from well to poorly differentiated HCC.
