Abstract:Purpose To investigate the clinicopathological features of mixed epithelial and stromal tumor of the kidney (MEST).Methods Ten cases with MEST were retrospectively studied by using clinical analysis, morphological observation and immunohistochemistry, with review of related literatures. Results Ten tumors were diagnosed as MEST,7 in women and 3 in men, their age ranged from 21 to 62 (mean 42) years. The patients had no symptoms,or occasionally presented with flank pain or haematuria.Grossly, the tumors were well circumscribed and the average diameter was 5.4 cm.Microscopically, the tumors consisted of tubules and cystically dilated epithelial components admixed with spindle cells with fascicles patterns. The epithelial cells were immunohistochemically positive for CK (10/10) and EMA (8/10);the spindle cells were positive for vimentin (10/10),ER(8/10),PR(8/10) and SMA(7/10).No tumor recurrence and metastasis were found in all ten patients by 1 to 5 years of follow-up.Conclusion MEST is a rare renal tumor with a favorable prognosis. The differential diagnosis should be made from cystic or mixed renal neoplasm.
