Abstract:Objective To explore the clinicopathological, immunohistochemical and imaging features of ectopic hamartomatous thymoma (EHT).Methods H&E stains and immunohistochemical studies were performed on the formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues in one case of EHT.Immunohistochemical study was performed using the method of LSAB.Combining with literature review, the clinicopathological, immunohistochemical and imaging characteristics of EHT were analysed. Results The tumor located in the suprasternal fossa.Chest CT showed a round lump with the size of 3 cm× 2 cm in the left carotid root, which had clear and smooth boundary, uniform internal density and slightly lower density than that of muscle.Grossly, the mass showed a round and well-circumscribed shape, with 3 cm in maximum diameter. On cut section,it was gray-white and toughened.Under the microscope,we noticed that the tumor was consisted of predominant spindle cells,a small number of epithelial component and mature adipose tissue.Immunohistochemical results suggested that the epithelial element expressed p63,CK5/6,EMA,CK7,CD99,whereas the spindle component expressed p63,CK5/6,CD99,CD10,CD34,SMA and CD117.Both elements were negative for S-100 and ER.Ki-67 presented a low level proliferation index. Conclusion EHT is a rare benign tumor, which occurs predominantly in the lower neck region of young and middle-aged males and exhibits unique profiles as well as lesion sites.
