Abstract:Objective This study aimed to investigate the clinical efficacy of High Flow Nasal Cannula Oxygen Therapy in the treatment of elderly patients with severe pneumonia in emergency settings, and to provide evidence-based support for the selection of emergency oxygen therapy plans. Methods 62 elderly patients with severe pneumonia admitted to our emergency department from January 2023 to June 2024 were selected. They were randomly divided into an observation group(n=31)and a control group(n=31)using a random number table method. The control group received conventional non-invasive mechanical ventilation treatment, while the observation group received nasal high flow oxygen therapy. Both groups received basic treatments including anti-infection,sputum management, and nutritional support. We compared the blood gas analysis indicators, respiratory function indicators, symptom improvement indicators, and clinical outcome indicators between two groups of patients after treatment. Results After treatment, the PaO2 and PaO2/FiO2 in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group, while PaCO2 was significantly lower than that in the control group(P<0.05);The respiratory rate of the observation group was significantly lower than that of the control group, and the cough symptom score was significantly lower than that of the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion High-flow nasal oxygen therapy can effectively improve oxygenation, reduce respiratory load, alleviate clinical symptoms, shorten hospital stay, and improve treatment efficacy in elderly patients with severe pneumonia in the emergency settings.
