Abstract:Microplastics(MPs),as pervasive environmental pollutants, have been confirmed to enter the human body and induce liver injury.Their toxic mechanisms primarily involve direct effects,as well as indirect induction of liver damage through pathways such as altering gut microbiota and compromising the intestinal barrier. The gut-liver axis serves as a crucial functional communication channel between the gut and the liver. In recent years, the toxic interplay mediated by MPs via the gut-liver axis has garnered significant attention. This review systematically examines the direct hepatotoxicity of MPs and the indirect toxic effects mediated by the gut-liver axis, aiming to provide a scientific basis for future research on the hepatotoxicity of MPs in humans.
