Moderating effect of self-management behavior on health literacy and readiness for hospital discharge in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract：Objective To explore the relationship among health literacy,readiness for hospital discharge and self-management behavior in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM),and to test the moderating effect of self-management behavior on health literacy and readiness for hospital discharge.Methods Inpatients with T2DM who received treatment in three Grade-A tertiary hospitals in Shaanxi Province were selected as the study objects by convenience sampling method.Diabetes self-management behavior scale,T2DM health literacy scale and readiness for hospital discharge scale were used to investigate them.The status quo and relationship of health literacy,readiness for hospital discharge and self-management behavior in patients with T2DM were discussed,and the effect of self-management behavior on health literacy and readiness for hospital discharge was analyzed.Results The scores of health literacy and readiness for hospital discharge of T2DM patients were(61.69±12.75)and(87.24±13.40),which were positively correlated(P＜0.01).The scores of self-management behavior were(89.15±18.30),which were positively correlated with both health literacy and readiness for hospital discharge(P＜0.01).Self-management behavior had a moderating effect between health literacy and readiness for hospital discharge.Conclusion Health literacy and self-management behavior have a certain predictive effect on readiness for hospital discharge,and self-management behavior can regulate the relationship between health literacy and readiness for hospital discharge.Clinical nursing staff can improve patients'health literacy and self-management behavior,form a scientific discharge preparation standard service,and improve patients'discharge preparation level.
