Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between the changes in fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations(fALFF)and cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia(SCZ)based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI).Methods Thirty-six patients with SCZ who visited the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine at Xijing Hospital,Air Force Medical University, were enrolled as the SCZ group, and 36 healthy controls were matched as the HC group. The two groups maintained a balance in demographic characteristics such as gender and age.All subjects underwent fMRI scans. The cognitive functions of all patients were evaluated using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Chinese Revision(WAIS-RC).Voxel-based analysis was used to explore the difference between the two groups in fALFF value and its correlation with cognitive score. Results Compared with HC group,fALFF values in SCZ group were significantly increased in the caudate nucleus, lentiform pallidum, left lentiform putamen, orbital frontal cortex, and olfactory cortex(P<0.05,FDR correction),while the primary visual cortex(peripheral zone of calcarine fissure),lingual gyrus, sensorimotor area(postcentral gyrus),and Heschl's gyrus showed significant decreased fALFF.There was a significant negative correlation between the fALFF value in the left olfactory cortex and the working memory ability score in the WAIS-RC(r=-0.47,P<0.004 1).Conclusion The results suggest that patients with SCZ show functional abnormalities.Among them, the abnormal fALFF value in the left olfactory cortex may be a potential neuroimaging marker of brain function impairment in patients with SCZ.
