Philosophical thinking on present and future situations through the retrospect of western medicine history

Abstract:This article reviewed the brief context of formation and progression of the historical landmarks in the western medicine. It is comprised of ancient medicine exemplified by Hippocrates and Galen, modern medicine including surgical intervention, the prevention, treatment and control of infectious diseases since Renaissance and industrial revolution, as well as the major medical achievements and shortfalls embracing radiation theory and molecular biology since the beginning of the twentieth century. The process indicates that evolution of the modern western medicine has been accompanied consistently by social changes and the advancements of science and technology. From this perspective, the modern western medicine will be more refined and divided in the near future.
