Abstract:Objective This study aimed to explore the application value of pleural effusion(PE)volume in assessing the se-verity of acute pancreatitis(AP).Methods 43 patients of AP with concurrent PE admitted to our hospital were selected.Ac-cording to the Atlanta classification of AP,the patients were divided into 24 of severe AP(SAP group)and 19 of non-severe AP(NSAP group). The volume of pleural effusion in each patient was measured using 3D Slicer, and the relationship between pleu-ral effusion volume and the severity of acute pancreatitis was studied to find the optimal cutoff value between SAP and NSAP.Results The volume of pleural effusion in the SAP group was significantly higher than that in the NSAP group, with statistical significance(P<0.05),and pleural effusion was more likely to occur on the left side in patients with AP.A pleural effusion vol-ume≥130.5 ml was determined as the optimal cutoff value for identifying severe AP,with a sensitivity of 62.5%and specificity of 84.2%.Conclusion Pleural effusion volume can be served as a reliable radiological biomarker for predicting the severity of AP.
