Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical significance of incidental thyroid uptake in patients subjected to 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging. Methods Images of 2817 patients who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT in our department for suspected various non-thyroidal lesions were selected,of whom 245(8.7%)had increased thyroid 18F-FDG uptake.Their imaging was analyzed, and standardized uptake values(SUVmax)were calculated, combined with the patients'age, gender, examination, surgery and follow-up results. Results 84(34.3%)of the 245 patients with thyroid 18F-FDG uptake increased showed diffuse uptake and 161(65.7%)showed focal uptake. All patients with diffuse uptake were diagnosed with benign disease, while 29(59.2%)of the 49 patients with focal uptake who underwent pathological diagnosis had benign lesions and 20(40.8%)had malignant lesions. The SUVmax were(8.92±6.60)and(5.57±3.48)for patients with malignant and benign lesions, with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).Conclusion In patients with incidental thyroid uptake on 18F-FDG PET/CT,diffuse uptake is usually associated with benign thyroid disease, whereas, focal uptake requires further examination and evaluation, which is more benefi-cial to improve the accuracy.
