Abstract:Objective To explore the value of quantified analysis of neonatal Bilirubin Encephalopathy by cranial ultrasound gray scale measurement. Methods The cranial ultrasound exam was performed in 52 newborns with Bilirubin Encephalopathy within 7 days after birth. And 51 newborns were taken as control group. The average gray values of different brain tissues including frontal lobe, occipital lobe and basal ganglia were measured using medical image analysis software"manual analysis"and were correlated with serum total bilirubin. Results The basal ganglia average gray value in Bilirubin Encephalopathy group was 130.1±12.2, higher than that in control group (100.5±1.63) (t=17.2, P<0.05).The average gray values in frontal lobe and occipital lobe of Bilirubin Encephalopathy group were respectively 80.55±8.82, 83.56±9.63, which had no significant change with control group (78.51±2.14, 81.43±2.09).The serum total bilirubin was correlated positively with average gray values in basal ganglia (r=0.97, P<0.01), but had no relationship with the average gray values in frontal lobe and occipital lobe (r=0.21, r=0.19;P>0.05).Conclusion Quantitative analysis of ultrasonographic gray value of neonatal Bilirubin Encephalopathy is characteristic that can provide important informations in the early diagnosis and in evaluating the prognosis of this disease.
