Abstract:Objective To explore the value of echocardiography in diagnosing persistent fifth aortic arch (PFAA) in children. Methods Seven cases confirmed with PFAA and 1 case missed diagnosed were involved in our study.Echocardiography imaging findings of those cases were retrospectively studied. Results Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) was performed in 8 cases.7 cases were confirmed with PFAA and 1 case was missed diagnosed. In the 7 cases confirmed with PFAA, four cases (57.14%) were correctly diagnosed by echocardiography and 3 cases (42.86%) were misdiagnosed.Of all the 4 cases who were correctly diagnosed by echocardiography, the aortic arch and brachiocephalic artery can be shown clearly.Of all the 3 cases missed diagnosed, the aortic arch and brachiocephalic artery can be shown well in 2 cases, and not well in 1 case. The brachiocephalic artery can't be shown well in the misdiagnosed case. Conclusion Persistent fifth aortic arch could be diagnosed by echocardiography, but it was prone to be misdiagnosed.CT or MRI could be used to confirm the diagnosis if needs.
