Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between the high frequency ultrasonography and virtual touch tissue imaging (VTI) and pathologic basis of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), and to improve the diagnostic accuracy of MTC.Methods The preoperative sonography and VTI of 28 nodules in 22 patients with MTC confirmed by pathology were analyzed retrospectively. Results In 28 nodules of MTC, 22 nodules located in the middle and upper pole, 20 nodules were irregular shaped, 19 nodules had clear boundary, 13 nodules had hypoechoic halo, 26 nodules were hypoechoic, 22 nodules were uneven internal echoes, 14 nodules had calcifications, 18 nodules were mixed vascula type, 19 nodules were greater than grade 4 in VTI score, 10 patients had cervical metastatic lymph nodes.Compared with the pathological results, the diagnostic accuracy rate of ultrasound was 71.4%.Conclusion The pathological basis of the MTC determines certain ultrasonic features.High frequency ultrasound and VTI imaging provide a good method for the diagnosis of MTC.
