Abstract:Objective To investigate the correlation between MSCT findings of thymic epithelial tumors and postoperative Masaoka clinical stage. Methods 48 patients who had undergone surgery were retrospectively reviewed for their preoperative CT findings and postoperative clinical characteristics.Surgical findings were evaluated according to the Masaoka staging system. The size, homogeneity, sharp, contour, infiltration of surrounding tissue, and metastasis on CT were analyzed. Results A significant association was observed between staging by CT and Masaoka clinical data.Masaoka pathologic stages were stage I for 20 (41.7%), stage II for 7(14.6%), stage III for 18(37.5%), and stage IV for 3(6.2%), Masaoka stage I or II thymomas were mostly small size, oval or round, which had smooth edges and even density, while, stage III or IV thymomas were larger size and usually irregularly shaped or lobulated with uneven density and incomplete capsule, infiltration of surrounding fat and and pleural seeding, distant metastasis. Conclusion MSCT can clearly show the internal structure, adjacent tissues invasion and distant me-tastasis of TET tumor. It can also differentiate between stage I, II and stage III, IV disease, which can determine proper manage-ment and prognosis of TET patients.
