Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the characteristics of Submandibular duct calculi as revealed by computed tomography image ( CT) studies. Methods We retrospectively reviewed CT of the Submandibular in 2000 consecutive subjects who ranged in age from 15 to 82 years (mean, 52.3 ±7.8 years). The CT images, clinical data of Submandibular duct calculi were assessed .All were used Toshiba 640-slice spiral CT .Results Submandibular duct calculi were found in 26 patients (26/2000=1.3%) who ranged in age from 15 to 72 years (mean, 36.6 ±6.5) years.44 calculi were found in 26 patients in-cluding single calculi (16/26=61.5%) and numerous calculi (10/26=38.5%) and (22/26=84.6%) with submandibular gland inflammation .We found that 26 submandibular duct calculi had been incidentally detected in 18 men ( 18/26=69 .2%) and 8 women (8/26=30.8%).11(11/44=25.0%) calculi were round and 28 (28/44=63.6%) were oval and 5 (5/44=11.4%) were irregular shape. The size of the lesions was (4.65 ±0.86) mm (0.8 ~12 mm).Submandibular duct calculi showed high density traveling along the submandibular duct direction with different size and shape on image CT .We found that submandibular gland increases and uneven density and calculi no enhancement after enhanced scan .Conclusion Combined with clinical manifestations and imaging features can make a clear diagnosis of the submandibular duct calculi .
