Abstract:Objective To investigate the feasibility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the early effectivity after the treatment of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for small primary hepatocellular carcinoma (SHCC) .Methods 75 lesions of small primary hepatocellular carcinoma (SHCC) in 63 cases were examinated in routine and dynamic enhance-ment MRI before and within 48 h after treatment of radiofrequency ablation ,and the changes of sequence signal were ob-served .Results Seventy three RFA areas of 63 patients typically exhibited hyperintensity on T 1 WI and hypointensity on T2 WI within 48 h after ablation .On contrast ,in enhanced MR images ,RFA lesions were shown peripheral rim of en-hancement within 48 h .The two residual tumor nodular lesions were found at the periphery of the RFA .These nodular le-sions were shown moderate to marked enhancement as well as hypointense signal on T 1 WI ,and moderate hyperintense sig-nal on T2 WI .Conclusion Routine MRI may be one of imaging methods for effectively assessing the early effect of RFA on SHHC treated by RFA .Routine plain MRI combined with contrast enhanced MRI may improve the cucuracy of recur-rence in SHCC after RFA treatment .
