Abstract:Objective To investigate the imaging features on multi-slice spiral CT (MSCT) of migratory foreign body in the extraluminal pharynx .Methods 32 cases underwent MSCT scan ,of which 18 cases were subjected to the enhanced CT scan .The manifestations were observed by the reconstruction techniques with the combination of MSCT multi-planar reconstruction (MPR) ,maximum intensity projection (MIP) ,and volume rendering (VR) .Results Migratory foreign body was found in the parapharyngeal space in 16 cases ,the tongue and sublingual soft tissue in 5 cases ,the submandibu-lar gland in 2 cases ,the tonsils in 3 cases ,the carotid sheath in 2 cases ,the retropharyngeal space in 3 ,the other parts 2 cases .Foreign objects had smooth edges ,26 cases exhibited the strip shape ,and 3 cases presented with the other forms . The average diameter of sharp end of foreign body was approximately (0 .7 ± 0 .2) mm ,CT density was (233 .9 ± 35 .4) HU .The soft tissue in location of the foreign body was swelling ,which presented with inhomogeneous ,medium ,and continuous enhancement .Conclusion MSCT scan can clearly show the foreign body location ,shape ,size ,and the adja-cent relationship ,which possesses important guiding significance for clinical treatment .
