Abstract:Objective To explore effects of piperine on behavior,EEG,glutamate and glutamine synthetase of hippocampus in epileptic rats induced by pentylenetetrazol(PTZ). Methods 36 adult Wistar rats were randomly di-vided into normal group(NG),epilepsy group(EG)and drug group(DG). PTZ(60 mg/ kg)was intraperitoneally injec-ted into rats in EG group and DG group to induce epilepsy. Rats in DG group were administered piperine(60 mg)in-traperitoneally 1 h before PTZ. Behavior and EEG were observed. Rats were sacrificed and brains were taken. ELISA method was used to determine the content of glutamate and glutamine synthetase of hippocampus. Results There was significant difference in behavior score,EEG,content of glutamate and glutamine synthetase of hippocampus in DG group than those in EG groups(p < 0. 01). Conclusion Piperine can inhibite the release of glutamate and promote the synthesis of glutamine synthetase, which can play a protection role in epilepsy.
