Abstract:Advanced glycation end products(AGEs)are key molecules involved in the local periodontal tissue homeostasis mediated by the hyperglycemic microenvironment.AGEs can induce periodontal epithelial barrier disorders, release of pro-inflammatory factors,osteogenesis-osteoclast imbalance, and regenerative repair damage through direct glycosylation or binding to the receptor of AGEs,resulting in periodontal soft and hard tissue homeostasis imbalance. In addition,AGEs can further regulate the functions and intracellular interactions of various immune cells, leading to an inflammatory cascade and aggravating tissue destruction. The purpose of this article is to systematically review the effects, mechanisms and research progress of AGEs in mediating periodontal tissue homeostasis, and to provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of periodontitis.
