Abstract:AIM:To evaluate the effectiveness of lidocaine with magnesium sulphate in patients undergoing root canal treatment following irreversible pulpitis.METHODS:A total of 84 patients with symptoms of irreversible pulpitis in mandibular molar teeth were randomly divided into the control group and the experimental group 42 cases each. The experimental group received inferior alveolar nerve block(IANB)with 1.7 mL of 2%lidocaine and 0.3 mL∶150 mg magnesium sulphate. The control group received IANB with 2.0 mL of 2%lidocaine.Preoperative visual analogue scale pain scores and perioperative VAS pain scores when introducing the first patency file(10#K)in the root canal were recorded. The onset of anesthesia and duration of anesthesia were evaluated post administration of the local anesthetic solution.RESULTS:Administration of 150 mg MgSO4 hastens the onset of anesthesia(2.95 min)and produces better anesthetic efficacy(7.11 VAS)compared to the control group(3.38 min and 6.06 VAS),The duration of anesthesia was significantly higher in the experimental group(131 min)compared to the control group(119.59 min). The difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).CONCLUSION:Based on the results, adding 150 mg magnesium sulphate to 2%lidocaine increased the effectiveness of IANB in patients with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis of mandibular molar teeth.
