A clinical retrospective study of 716 supernumerary teeth

Abstract:AIM:This study aimed to analyze and summarize the clinical and imaging characteristics,as well as treatment methods,of supernumerary teeth to provide more evidence for the diagnosis and treatment of supernumerary teeth.METHODS:The clinical and imaging data of 488 patients diagnosed with supernumerary teeth in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,Hospital of Stomatology,General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University from January 1,2021 to May 1,2024 were collected.The patients'demographic information,clinical manifestations,imaging features,and treatment plans were retrospectively analyzed.Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 22.0 software.RESULTS:A total of 488 patients with 716 supernumerary teeth were included.The mean age of the patients was 8.94 years,with a male-to-female ratio of 2.53∶1.The majority of supernumerary teeth were located in the anterior maxillary region(96.51%),with the crown being the most common form(84.78%).Most patients had one supernumerary tooth(62.3%),followed by two(33.2%),while cases with three or more supernumerary teeth were rare.The orientation of the supernumerary teeth was predominantly inverted(50.7%),leading to malocclusion in 75.2%of cases.Root resorption and cystic changes were observed in 8.81%of patients.In the procedure for extracting excess teeth,the proportion of palatal and buccal approaches was 79.3%and 20.7%,respectively.CONCLUSION:Supernumerary teeth that may cause other problems should be extracted as soon as possible
