Comparison of clinical effect of POvidone iodine gargle and Xipayi gingival consolidation gargle in the treatment of acute pericoronitis of wisdom teeth

Abstract：AIM:To investigate the clinical efficacy of POvidone iodine gargle and Xipayi gingival consolidation gargle in the treatment of acute pericoronitis of wisdom teeth.METHODS:A total of 135 patients diagnosed with acute pericoronitis of wisdom teeth between December 2020 and June 2023 at the Department of General Dentistry,Xi'an Jiaotong University Hospital of Stomatology and Xi'an No.9 Hospital were enrolled and randomly assigned to three groups:A,B,C(n=45 per group).Group A was rinsed alternately with normal saline and 3％hydrogen peroxide solution,group B was rinsed with POvidone iodine gargle,and group C was rinsed with Xipayi gingival consolidation gargle.All patients underwent one treatment per day for three consecutive days.Changes in pain scores using the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)and levels of gingival crevicular fluid cytokines before and after treatment were assessed and compared among the three groups.RESULTS:After treatment,VAS scores significantly decreased in all three groups(P<0.05).Reductions in pain were more pronounced in group B and C compared to group A(P<0.05)with group B showing a significant reduction than group C(P<0.05).Post-treatment levels of interleukin-1β(IL-1β),interleukin-6(IL-6)and prostaglandin E2(PGE2)in gingival crevicular fluid were significantly lower across all groups(P<0.05).The decreases were greater in group B and C than group A(P<0.05),and Group B showed significantly lower cytokine levels than group C(P<0.05).No significant changes were observed in tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)levels of the three groups in gingival crevicular fluid after treatment(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:Both POvidone iodine gargle and Xipayi gingival consolidation gargle demonstrated significant clinical efficacy in treating acute pericoronitis of wisdom teeth,serving as effective alternatives to conventional pericoronitis irrigation methods.Among them,POvidone iodine gargle provided superior outcomes in pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects.
