Abstract:Enzymatic degradation of the exposed collagen fibrils and hydrolysis of the adhesive within the hybrid layers are two direct contributors to the lack of durability of resin-dentin bonds. The exposure and activation of matrix metallproteinase(MMPs)caused by intrafibrillar demineralization based on acid-etching technique, and the extra-and intrafibrillar water caused by the inconsistency between the penetration depth of adhesive and the etching depth of dentin and by inability of resin monomers to infiltrate into intrafibrillar spaces, were the main reasons for the destruction of the hybrid layers.Hence, the objective of this paper was to review the research progress, application and prospect of protection strategies of hybrid layers in dentin bonding.
