Influence of Zhibai Dihuang pills combined with basic periodontal treatment on clinical efficacy and inflammatory factors in patients with chronic periodontitis and type 2 diabetes

Abstract：AIM:To investigate the influence of Zhibai Dihuang pills combined with basic periodontal treat-ment on clinical efficacy and inflammatory factors in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP)and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS:60 patients with T2DM and CP were randomly divided into 2 groups(n＝30). The patients in control group were treated with periodontal basic therapy,in test group with periodontal basic therapy and oral adminis-tration of Zhibaidihuang pills,8 pills tid for 8 weeks. Sulcus bleeding index (SBI),probing depth (PD),attachment loss (AL),fasting blood glucose (FBG),glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C),homeostasis model assessment of insu-lin resistance index (HOMA-IR),TNF-α,IL-6,and C- reactive protein (CRP)in serum and gingival crevicu-lar fluid were detected. RESULTS:SBI,PD,AL,FBG,HbA1C and HOMA-IR of the test group were significantly improved compared with those of control group (P＜0.05);TNF-α,IL-6 and CRP in serum and gingival crevicular fluid of the test group were significantly lower than those of the control group (P＜0.05). CONCLUSION:Zhibaidi-huang pill combined with periodontal treatment can significantly improve periodontal environment,glycemic control in patients with T2DM and CP,and its mechanism may be related to the inhibition of inflammatory factors.
