The epidemiological investigation of caries status of 7~9 year old children in Urumqi

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the prevalence of dental caries, the eruption and caries prevention of the first permanent molars in children aged 7~9 years in Urumqi. METHODS:A multi-stage,cluster sampling method was used.3 204 children aged 7~9 years were randomly selected from 5 schools in Urumqi. The eruption and dental caries of the first permanent molars and deciduous molars were investigated. The relationship of caries prevalence with gender,age and nationality was analyzed. RESULTS:The total caries prevalence rate of the first permanent molar was 20.19%,the mean caries was 0.55; the caries prevalence of Han nationality was higher than that of other ethnic groups (P<0.05),and the caries prevalence was increasing with age. The caries prevalence rate of deciduous molars was 83.46%,and the mean caries was 4.60,which was positively correlated with the caries of the first permanent mo-lar[OR=3.818,95% CI(2.712,5.376),P<0.05]. The rate of eruption of the first molar was 12.86%, the rate of pit and fissure sealing rate was 6.3%,and the rate of caries filling was 7.6%. The caries filling rate of Han nation-ality was higher than other ethnic groups(P<0.05). CONCLUSION:Caries prevalence of children aged 7~9 years in Urumqi is high. The rate of pit and fissure sealing and the rate of caries filling are low. It is necessary to strengthen the early health propaganda and guidance of oral health care.
