Abstract:AIM:To assess the efficacy of removing the filling material from oval-shaped canals with Pro-Taper Next rotary files. METHODS:60 extracted human mandibular premolars were instrumented up to a size F2 with ProTaper Universal, then filled with gutta -percha and AH -Plus sealer using the continuous wave of condensation technique. Then the teeth were divided into 3 groups(n=20). The filling material was removed with hand files(H), ProTaper Universal Retreatment(PTUR) and ProTaper Next(PTN) respectively. The debris extruded out of the apical foramen was collected and weighted. The working time was recorded. Then the teeth were split longitudinally, observed under microscope and evaluated by Atuo CAD software. The data were statistically analyzed with SPSS software. RESULTS: The total retreatment time of H group was the longest (P <0.05),between PTN and PTUR groups P>0.05. There was no significant difference among the groups according to the total residual gutta-percha and sealer (P>0.05). The debris and irrigant extrusion in PTN group was the least, followed by PTUR group and the most in H group(P<0.05). CONCLUTION:During the root canal retreatment,PNT is effictive to remove filling material from oval-shaped canals and produces less apically extruded debris and irrigant.
