Oral health status of disabled individuals attending Special School in Yulin, China

Abstract:AIM:To investigate the oral health status of disabled children attending Yulin Special School. METHODS:A cross-sectional study was conducted for 279 disabled individuals aged 1-18-years attending Yulin Special School in Guangxi. Caries and periodontal status were examined and compared between different ages,genders, and types of disability respectively. RESULTS: Overall, the caries prevalence of this population was 69.89%. The mean dmft and DMFT were 4.14 ± 4.68 and 1.39 ± 2.94,respectively. The caries filling ratio was only 1.43%. The gingival bleeding index and dental calculus indexes were 18.28% and 11.11%,respectively. The mean dmft,DMFT, gingival bleeding index and dental calculus index increased with age. There was no significant difference of caries prev-alence among the different age groups (P>0.05),no significant difference of periodontal indexes between genders or among different disability types was observed(P>0.05). CONCLUSION:The caries and periodontal status of disa-bled children were severe. More attention should be paid to the oral health of the individuals with special need.
