Abstract:AIM:To study the effects of sample form of dental materials on the cytotoxicity test results by agar diffusion method. METHODS:The extract and disc specimen of dental filling materials of light-curing compos-ite resin(LCR),zinc oxide eugenol cement(ZOEC),zinc phosphate cement(ZPC),glass ionomer cement(GIC) and zinc polycarboxylate cement(ZPOC)were respectively prepared, disc specimens hardened for 24 h. The cytotoxicity of the extracts, immediatly immediatly prepared discs and the discs hardened for 24 h was respectively tested using agar diffusion method. RESULTS:For the extracts, their cytotoxicity decreased in an order of ZOEC(severe) >ZPC=GIC=ZPOC(moderate) >LCR(mild). For disc specimens hairdened for 24 h,the cytotoxicity decreased in an order of ZOEC(severe) >ZPC=ZPOC=GIC=LCR(mild). For immediately prepared discs, the cytotoxicity decreased in an order of ZOEC(severe) >ZPC(moderate) >ZPOC=GIC=LCR(mild). CONCLUSION:With agar diffusion method, the sample form of a tested materials with severe or mild cytotoxicity has no influence on the cytotoxic re-sponse. For the materials with moderate cytotoxicity, the sample form affects its cytotoxic response slightly.
