Caries status and caries risk assessment of migrant workers' children in Chengdu

Abstract:AIM:To Investigate the dental caries status and its influencing factors in migrant workers' children and to assess the caries risk.METHODS:One primary school which recruit migrant workers' children were selected with random sampling in Chengdu,all of the children in grade one (including 72 migrant workers' children,and 54 non-migrant worker's children) were included in this study.The data was collected from every child by clinical examination,salivary sampling,a structured questionnaire and caries risk assessment were taken by Cariogram software.RESULTS:The prevalence of primary tooth caries of migrant and non-migrant workers' children was 76.3% and that and 81.5% respectively(P > 0.05).Moreover,the prevalence of the young permanent tooth of migrant and non-migrant workers' children was 15.3% and 5.6% respectively (P > 0.05).According to the Cariogram results,there were 8.33% of the children with high caries risk and 12.5% of the children with low caries risk in migrant workers' children group,whereas 16.67% of the children with high caries risk and 16.67% with low caries risk in non-migrant workers' group(P > 0.05).CONCLUSION:Systematic community-based oral health promotion should be strengthened and preventive-oriented oral health care systems are needed,including promotion of further self-care practices.
