A survey and analysis of the epidemiological characteristics of dental caries and periodontal diseases in drug addicted population in a city

Abstract:AIM: To investigate the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal diseases in compulsory drug addiction rehabilitation personnels in a city, and to investigate the possible risk factors.METHODS: 419 subjects in a compulsory drug addiction rehabilitation center were enrolled in the study.Oral health examination and questionnaire survey were performed.RESULTS: ① Drug addicts usually took no account of oral health maintenance.② The mean scores of decayed teeth (DT), missing teeth (MT), filled teeth (FT), decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT), and the prevalence of gingival bleeding in the former drug addicted population were all higher than those in general population.③ The scores of DT, DMFT and CPI in the subjects with 3 years or longer drug abusing history were higher than in those with less than 3 years drug abusing experience (Z=-3.15,P=0.002;Z=-3.679,P=0;Z=-4.469,P=0).④ The scores of DT and DMFT in the subjects who brushed their teeth more than 2 times per day were lower than in those who brushed their teeth less than 2 times (Z=-4.711,P=0;Z=-4.234,P=0).CONCLUSION: The oral health status of drug addicts is grim.The duration of drug abuse and the poor oral hygiene are the major risk factors for dental caries and periodontal diseases in drug addicted population.
