The effects of visible third molars on adjacent second molars
Abstract:AIM:To investigate the influence of visible third molars (V-M3s) on the health of their adjacent second molars (A-M2s).METHODS:According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, sociodemographic information of eligible subjects was collected.Caries and periodontal pathology of second molars (M2s) were examined and recorded.M2s were grouped into 2 based on the presence or absence of adjacent V-M3s,and the data were then analyzed.RESULTS:572 subjects participated in the study with 2,070 M2s enrolled. The presence of V-M3s was associated with higher risks of at least one site of pocket probing depth equal to or greater than 5 mm,at least three sites of bleeding on probing, looseness and furcation involvement on their A-M2s,with ORs of 1.93,1.38,1.64 and 3.51 respectively. However, there was no significant difference with respect to the effect of V-M3s on caries of A-M2s (P>0.05).CONCLUSION:V-M3s may increase the risks of periodontal diseases of their A-M2s.
