Expression of VEGF and E-selectin in serum of rats with experimental periodontitis and atherosclerosis

Abstract：AIM:To observe the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and E-selectin in serum of rats with experimental periodontitis and atherosclerosis.METHODS:48 male Wistar rats (6-month old) were randomly divided into group A (control group),group B (periodontitis group),group C (arherosclerosis group) and group D (periodontitis plus atherosclerosis)(n =12).At the end of 4th W,2 rats were sacrificed to confirm the successful establishment of periodontitis and arherosclerosis.The remaining rats were sacrificed at the end of 12 W.Maxilla were taken for HE staining,blood were taken for the detection of VEGF and E-selectin expression by ELISA.RESUITS:Histological observation showed that periodontitic changes in group B and D.Atherosclerotic lesions could be observed in carotid artery of group C and D.Serum VEGF and E-selectin level was higher in groups B,C and D than that in group A (P ＜0.05).Moreover,serum VEGF and E-selectin level in group D was higher than that in group B and C (P ＜ 0.05).CONCLUSION:Periodontitis and atherosclerosis have a positive correlation.
